BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH STATEMENT ON MARRIAGE
A. We believe the Bible teaches marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in a monogamous covenant commitment. Marriage reveals the relationship between Christ and His church (Ephesians 5:22-33), provides the framework for intimate sexual companionship according to biblical standards, and provides the means for procreation of the human race (Genesis 1:28). We believe that sexual intimacy is a gift of God that is only to be expressed between one man and one woman (as genetically defined) within the bond of marriage. (Genesis 2:24-25; Matthew 19:4-6; 1 Corinthians 7:3-5; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8; Hebrews 13:4). As a result, to be consistent with God's design and biblical morality, our practice in regard to marriage is limited to heterosexual, monogamous marriage.
B. We believe that in order to preserve the function, unity, and integrity of the church as the local body of Christ, and to provide a biblical role model to church members and the community, it is imperative that all persons employed by the church in any capacity, or who serve as volunteers, should abide by and agree to this Statement on Marriage and conduct themselves accordingly whether at church, home, or in the community.
C. In view of our biblical commitments, the pastor of Bethel Baptist Church will perform NO same gender weddings or any other anti-biblical weddings or ceremonies at the church or any other location. Furthermore, no member or attendee shall be permitted to use any of the facilities of the church for same gender, anti-biblical weddings, receptions, or other functions.
D. We do believe that God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking God’s mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ (Romans 8), and are thus afforded compassion, love, kindness and dignity. Hateful and harassing behavior, attitudes, or speech directed towards any individual are to be repudiated and are not in accord with Scripture nor the doctrines of Bethel Baptist Church. (1 Peter 2:13-25; 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12).
The Gospel is the good news that the just and gracious Creator of the universe has looked upon hopelessly sinful men and women and has sent His Son, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, to bear His wrath against sin on the Cross and to show His power over sin in the resurrection, so that everyone who trusts in Jesus as Savior and Lord will be reconciled to God forever.*
